Hello!
So far, I can't find any information on making a connection to active
directory for reports in visual studio .net 2003.
From the list of Available Data Sources I select "OLE DB (ADO)" and from the
list of OLE DB Providers I select "OLE DB Provider for Microsoft Directory
Services". On the next screen where I put in my data source I try something
like: LDAP://OU=<ou>,DC=<dc1 >,DC=<dc2> OR
LDAP://OU=<ou>,DC=<dc1 >,DC=<dc2>;sama ccountname;subt ree (for example)
When I click 'Finish' a tree node labelled "Active Directory Service
Interface" under OLE DB (ADO) shows up with "...no items found..."
I'm not sure what to do. Is there something wrong with my LDAP query or am I
looking to make the connection in the wrong place or the wrong way?

I would propose that you instead specify a strongly typed dataset, manually
populate the dataset via code, and pass the dataset to your report. This
will allow you to have an easier time in development, plus it would be
easier to take advantage of custom properties in AD.
Example,
Table: Domains
Table: OrganizationalU nits
Table: Users
Table: Groups
Table: Workstations
Table: Printers
Table: Servers
Table: EventLogs
Table; EventLogEvents

Looking at reporting tools and was wondering if
anyone else has gone thru this. Crystal seems rediculously
expensive once you take into account licensing, while
Active is runtime-free meaning only developer licenses.
On a cost only basis, it seems pretty obvious but
what about feature wise. I simply do not have enough
time to do a drawn-out analysis and was wondering if
anyone else had.

the access method to use Active Directory. (It uses forms authentication

I have just briefly studied the build-in report generator in VS 2005, and
this seems more than sufficient at the moment. But still I would like to

On reflection, you could possibly make the app a self extracting zip file
which extracts the EXE and a settings file and then starts the app, then when
you app closes, it can repack the settings file and itself into the exe. You
would probably want a tool for this bit which could be in the zip too.
So the app isnt single exe when running but when not running, it is.
Just an idea for you to think about.
