Application Folder Organization (Best Practices)

Hello,

I am developing an application for Windows 2000 and Windows XP. I plan on
installing the application under The 'Program Files' folder. My application
generates some log files as well as several types of data files. I know that
I cannot create/write to files under the 'Program Files' folder unless I am
a power user or an administrator. I would like my application to be run by a
normal user. What are the best practices for choosing folder locations for
logs and data generated by an application? Some of my data is applicable to
all users and some is only for the current user.

Thank you for your help,

Digital

Could anyone recommend a book (or a web site) that defines best practices in ASP.NET application development? E.g. 1) Precede your control id's with type of control btnSubmit, txtName, etc. 2) Group relevant .aspx files into subfolders within your project etc.

Hello, I have been assigned the task to design the audit trail for the ASP.NET web application. I don't know what the best practices for such audit trails are. Our application one dedicated user name and password to perform the database operations. I need to capture all the operations which are performed on the database. Also I need to able to capture the operations which directly performed on the backend directly using the tools like...

Hi all, I am wondering if their are any links out their dealing with best practices when it comes to enterprise web site organization. We are still maintaining classic ASP applications so keeping that slant in mind would be great. How do you all organize your code / presentation / modules / classes / images ect?

Hi, I'm having a few issues adapting to new 2.0 "website" project vs. the old 1.1 "web application". One of the major issues I'm having is with the notion of namespaces. Using the old way, I could add a directory to my project (say, "Controls"), then add a user control to that directory. From an .aspx I could then import the namespace ("using .Controls";), and then reference that control. With the 2.0 way of doing things, if I add a...

I have an app that needs to run with elevated privileges on Windows Vista (Registry operations - don't ask). I have added a manifest file that looks like this: ---snip--- <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?> <assembly xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" manifestVersion="1.0"> <assemblyIdentity version="1.0.0.0" processorArchitecture="X86" name="myapp" type="win32"/>

Hi, I'm about to develop a small python application and I wonder how to organize files in this application. I'm familar to java, so I'm tempted to use the same convention : 1 file per class and 1 folders per package. I know that packages doesn't exists in python, they are modules instead. May I create specific module for each "group of class" ? My application follow the MVC paradigm, so basically, I've a package Model, a package

In Python it's common to place several related classes in the same module (i.e., file). You don't have to write so much boilerplate code as in Java, so classes tend to be smaller in size; you may even find classes with an empty body.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
