Programming For Other Programs? Plugins?

Hello,

Does anyone know how to code plugins, or code run off your own program
that affects another program?

Example: File1.exe sends the string "Test" to File2.exe (A Completely
different program) and "Test" Appears in a textbox on File2.exe.

Its kind of hard to explain, but I hope you know what I mean. I'm not asking
for code on how to do that, I'm asking for the general idea on how to do it,
but whatever you can contribute will be appreciated. Thanks. :)

The way of writing plugins is usually that the "driver" program
publishes an interface (as a DLL, usually) and the plugin is another
DLL. The "driver" is then told (eg in a configuration file) the name of
the plugin DLL, and it's loaded and used via interfaces.

See http://www.pobox.com/~skeet/csharp/plugin.html for a complete
example. The main point of the article is how to avoid problems with
it, but it does give complete code.

We write Photoshop plugins and it works exactly as John says; a plugin is
compiled as a DLL and must contain an entry point with a specified
signature. Photoshop scans a given folder for any DLLs that have a valid
entry point, and loads them when they're called. If you're doing it
yourself, you need to be careful that you keep the interfaces identical
between host and plugin. If all your plugins have a common interface, you
can dynamically load them within the host app and call the interface
function in the knowledge that the plugin knows what to do. Be aware of
changes you make to shared data and any errors and exceptions that can get
thrown - generally, having plugins throwing unexpected exceptions is a Bad
Thing.

I am used to programming in DOS mode via Borland C++. I would now like to create programs for the Windows envirinment. Is it absoultely necessary to use Visual C++ to do this? Are there other tools that can help me in doing Windows programming via C++? How am I going to create drop-down menus and allow my programs to interact with the mouse? Regards, Icon

I've been utilising C for lots of small and a few medium-sized personal projects over the course of the past decade, and I've realised lately just how little progress it's made since then. I've increasingly been using scripting languages (especially Python and Bourne shell) which offer the same speed and yet are far more simple and safe to use. I can no longer understand why anyone would willingly use C to program anything but the lowest...

Hi everyone, I am a complete novice at computers and programming and right now, all i need to know is that why do many people prefer C to C++? Is it just because they are used to using C and are conservative about switching over to C++ or is there some other reason? Secondly, could you please tell me how the knowledge of C will help me later on? I have a teacher here who just shrugged at this question and replied that the knowledge of...

I'm working on a simple system which allows users to develop audio plugins. The plugins take the form of dll's and I have constructed the dll so that it looks for a simple text file which determines how the plugin will work. I need to find a way of getting the dll to load the right text file, as each text file may be a different effect. My first idea was that a user would simply rename the dummy dll to the name of the text file, for...

I bought this book years ago, when I was just learning C++. Since then I've gone through every math course offered at my college, taken courses on coding C & thinking in terms how how to make the smallest tightest algorithms to preform specific functions. I've also grown and matured a lot, and am wiser and older. I'm reading through the C+ + Programming Language, Third Edition now, and I can actually understand it. I can understand it...

Posted by Ganon11 So, you want to learn how to program! Good for you! Programming is a very intruiging and fun activity to pick up, and it's also a great career choice if you like it! Finally, it can be a great brain teaser-type activity, as you challenge yourself with creative and difficult problems! But there's a problem. What I'm typing in right now is English. It's cool, it lets you understand what I'm saying, and we've spoken...

You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
