global objects and singleton template

Hi, there,

I have an issue about globally access data. My multi-threaded application
has some resources that need to be accessed by multiple threads and have the
lifetime of the application, such as the logging mechanism, various machine
statuses. I encapsulate them in different classes and use global objects
right now. As I look more into c++ programming, I realize that I could
improve my code quality by ensuring only one object of these classes can be
created, which means to define these classes in a way that only one object of
the class would be in the application. I've looked at some online resources
about singleton pattern, but don't seem to find the right fit. Could someone
kindly help me out? Thanks a lot!

I'm thinking about sort of a factory-system where the factories get instanciated on program start (through a global object in the .cpp file), and registers themselves with a singelton. Is it a good idea to create global objects like that? Maybe it won't work at all? code: class AbstractFactory { ...};

I could not find any answer in BJ's C++ bible or on the WEB so far. Thanks! If you run sbin (linking with .a), the output is 0 however if

After a code review one coworker insisted that global are very dangerous. He didn't really give any solid reasons other than, "performance penalties", "hard to maintain", and "dangerous". I think that I am using them appropriate in class in question. One typical example: This class initiates TCP session, keeps sending commands to the server app and gets messages and codes back, message and code are stored in global variables to be preserved...

If I have a class that hold, for instance, user settings that should be accessible to the entire program logic, what is a good paradigm to use? In C++, I would have made it a global object, protected if necessary for thread safety. In C#, of course, there are no global objects. The Program object is static, so cannot contain object instances. While I could store it in my main form pass it around, that seems cumbersome. I could do a...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
