Web Service returns 404

I have read numerous posts on this same issue and searched Microsoft's
knowledge base and there are no solutions offered.

I have a web service installed on 4 machines: 2 dev servers, 1 staging
and production. The web service works fine on 3 of the machines,
however, on one dev server, invoking the service returns a 404. You
browse to the .asmx file and view the wsdl no problem, but invoking a
web service call returns a 404.

We tried making sure all the possible .net extensions are mapping to
the asp.net dll. We also reinstalled the .net framework using
aspnet_regiis.

Is there anyone out there who has found what is causing this?

Thanks in advance!

I figured it out - after spending an hour on the phone with Microsoft
support.

In application configuration, where mapping file extensions to the dll
- the asmx extension should not have the checkbox "Check to see file
exists" selected.
Hope that helps other people out - thanks.

Hey all - I'm having a really confusing problem concerning a web service. Right now, I have an application that needs to call a web service that does nothing but return "true" (this will obviously change once the program's fully built to actually do something, but for testing, it works). The only code I added to the service is below:

I have a C# Windows Service running as the NetworkService account because it needs to access a network share. As part of the service's initialization, I want the service to terminate, if an unrecoverable error occurs. When that case occurs, I create a ServiceController object and call the Stop() method. However - I get an exception thrown saying access denied. If I switch to using the LocalService account it works fine, but I lose...

Hello, I created a Web Service using .Net 2.0 that has a function that returns a DataTable. I can test the function from the web page when I access the .asmx from a browser on localhost and it works. I can also test the function using VB6 and the xmlhttp activex object. The problem I have now is when using VS 2005 or VB.Net 2005 Express and creating a web references is that the proxy created doesn't map the function as returning a DataTable...

Using C#, .NET3.5, Visual Studio 2008 and WCF on Windows VISTA SP1, I have written a service, service host (as a C# console application) and a client. The service uses Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Application to access an Excel file on the local hard drive, opens it (using Application.Workbooks.Open), reads out some data and the provides said data to the client. Everything works perfectly when the Service Host is a C# console...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
