I'm working on a client-server application where the client is
controlling two devices (aka servers) which both implement the same
interface contract.
We have a set of about 4 assemblies which specify the interfaces and
the data types which flow through the interfaces. Initially, we
thought this would be enough for the client to talk with the server.
In general it is, but when an exception is generated by the server it
fails to...

Suppose that I have a class in an assembly that is delivered to the user,
what can I do to change the class so that it doesn't break the
binary compatibility? That is, user application can run with recompiling
and relinking.
I know that if I define an interface, and only expose the interface but not
the class which implments the interface, I can add a data member to the
class without breaking the binary compatibility. If the class...

Just a question. If i have an app with a dll version 1.5 and I replace it
with version 1.6 everithing works fine.
If i change the strong name however the app crash, but this is fine.
My curiosity is then: the various System, System.data and so on are signed?
If so, how can the mono project prot them without having the private key?
this is just for curiosity, no real need,
Thanks!

I have a solution containing many usercontrol projects.
When I wish to reference a usercontrol in another project I can select
either the project or the assembly.
Does it make a difference which one I select?
Thanks

Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to maintain compatability with
assemblies providing the interfaces remains the same? At the moment if I
re-compile an assembly without actually changing an interface it breaks
compatability, forcing all of my consuming assemblies to need recompiling.
I know this could be done with VB6, what about .NET?
Nick.

I have read that you can specify only the major/minor numbers (plus token and
culture) to reference a DLL installed in the GAC, and that the resolver will
"upselect" to the dll with the latest build and revision number. Is this
true?
However, when I add references in the compilation section of the web.config
of an ASP.NET app, it can not find the DLL in the GAC unless I give it the
build and revision number. I would rather not do this...

I've been using the date (in YMMDD) format for the build number in the
AssemblyVersion attribute. However, it appears that numbers 65534 are
invalid!! Bit of a bummer for 2007!!!
Is there a reason for this? 65535 would make sense!?
Is there a work around, patch, etc??

I have pasted the part I'm interested in below. My company doesn't use
versioning or the gac and I'd like to. We're on vs.net 2005 & .net 2., is
this still true or has it changed since then?
thanks

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules.
He will explain when you may want to use classes instead of User Defined Types (UDT). For example, to manage the data in unbound forms.
Adolph will...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
