Distributing Database applications

I have been going around in circles trying to understand the method of
creating a database in VB.Net 2003 and distributing that application and
database.

It seems if I use the Server Explorer to create the pledbConnection etc, the
link to the database works ok on the local machine but when the application
is distributed, the program points to the original path (which of course is
different to the target system). Is there any way to maintain the releative
path to the database when you distribute the application.

Secondly, the tutorials I have point heavily to using a SQL server instead
of oledB . I found MSDE 2000 and downloaded it but cannot install it. The
dialog indicates it needs a strong SA password and I am not sure what this
is and how to apply it.

Also, if I eventually managed to install MSDE, can it be installed with the
application or does the user needs to install this separately ?

Thanks in advance.

Of course it can be automated by those I call them wrapper like Install
Shield and so. But just install your MSDE saprarate will have no harm. Learn
isql at command prompt sometime could be useful for you. Good luck.

Ask in the ADO.NET newsgroup for a wider database oriented audience and
their responses.

For MSDE, search Google for "msde sapwd setup". Don't install it with a
blank password.

Hello Recently changed from using Access to MySQL. Looked at the online docs but could not find anything about the process of distributing a database to customers. Can anyone give me a general idea of what is required. I sort of did a test by simply moving the database files to a different directory but was unable to connect after that through my VB front end. Also If anyone could point me in direction of links that show how to do...

I read an article by, by Mike Groh, in Access-VB-SQL Advisor Magazine, Week 37 that concerns me quite a bit on distributing Access Applications commercially. First I need to describe a "commercial version" of my application that I hope to distribute after completing all the beta testing: A. It was developed using MS AccessXP Pro (developers edition), B. It has a front end MyApplication.mdb and a MyAppBbackend_be.mde; the front end is...

I have little or no knowledge as to how a runtime Access database application might be distributed from a website. I am sure that I'm about to find out. I do have one question for you wizards though... My experience has shown that when I have installed applications from the web, my browser generally asks what I want to do with the file... Do I wanna save it? or Do I wanna run it? The browser generally warns about the dangers of executing...

I've done some research on the net and think I have an answer, but I'm just looking for some other opinions. I would like to create an access database file to distribute to others. I would use an excel (which the other users would have) front-end to manipulate the database via vba. I'm assuming that since I'm only distributing the database file and not any part of the access program, there shouldn't be any type of legal issue. Any...

I have an application written in VB.Net that opens an Access database (ie a Microsoft Jet 4 database mdb file). It does not use Access forms or reports, so there is no need for users to have Access itself. I have two questions. 1) Must my users must have the Jet 4 database engine? Or is its functionality contained in the .Net Framework? 2) Jet 4 was distributed with Access 2000 and subsequent versions. Was it distributed with...

It happens much too often that I have to tell a client how to fix up missing references when I send them an application, especially if the client is distributing it to different users. It makes me look unprofessional (which I guess I am to some extent). I've tried the fixuprefs() function I got from the knowledge base (that uses the qryTestRefs and checks for error 3075), but it doesn't seem to get called, and I still get the problem. I'm...

Hello you all, I have created an application that reads and writes data to a access database. To access the database, I use a System DataSource (Connection string: DSN=MyDataSourceName). Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
