Data Files Instead of Registry For Application Data

I understand that MS are encouraging developers using the NET platform to
move away from storing application related data in the registry and to store
it in data files instead.

Is there a "best practice" in regard to the type of data files to be used -
is there, for example, a move back towards the former 'ini' file types?

I realise this is a fairly general question and would appreciate links to
anywhere that this is/has been discussed.

Hi Martin,

While they did make the use of the registry using vb.net so simple, I do not
believe that.

But some data can better be hold in a config.file, one of the reasons, it is
much easier to transport than your application to another computer.

And therefore in my opinion is the best to do things as run settings (last
screen size, last screen posistion) the registry and things that should be
transportable in a config.xml file.

Just my 2 Eurocents about this.

I am looking for different opinions on how the state data of a .NET application should be stored. An example would be the size and location of the main application window. This allows the users' preferences to be restored the next time the application is run. The classic DOS/Windows method was to use a ".ini" file in the application directory. This had the advantage of being very easy to backup and would be deleted if the application...

I came accross the need to store binary data in the registry. The binary data to be saved is kept within a string in the code segment. If I write that string to a registry, not all of the data is kept. There are some certain chars included within that string, which the registry SetValue function cannot handle and therefore the string is being cut off. Instead of storing that string with special characters as a string in the registry, I am...

My question is about storing data in a database. Yes I understand that you can link to a database in your program and read and write to the database etc etc. Well, that's all find and dandy but what if the person you're writing the application for...

After reading some articles regarding confuguration data I'm a bit confused. Where is the right place for storing configuration data? - XML-files? - registry? - INI-files? (from a users point of view, ini-files are more comfortable to read and edit) Where should I store user specific config data? Where should I store machine specific config data?

Hi, I'm building a web application in VB.NET 1.1 where users will upload Excel files at this webpage and the web application will transfer the data from the uploaded Excel file into MS SQL 2000. There are around 600-700 records and about 56 columns in the Excel file which is to be uploaded daily. There will be a few different files which I need to implement for as well. I've sourced for and tried alot of methods. But either they can't satisfy...

I have program.cs, my "main" form and then a "settings" form. My "main" form existed for awhile and I had constants, instantiations, properties, etc within it created. I went to create my "settings" form and constantly found myself adjusting my "main" form entities to be static and inevitably just passing in the "main" forms 'this' instance to the "settings" constructor to simplify it all.

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
