Return ID if record already exist?

I looked everywhere (Google, manual, etc.) but can't find an answer to this
question.

If I do a "INSERT IGNORE INTO" query into a UNIQUE field and the word I'm
trying to insert already exists, can I get the ID of that existing record
returned so I can use it in the rest of the query?

You could perform a search for the given value. If it is found, return a message that it already exists, else write a new line.... (Hope this is clear)

When it comes to adding records in related tables, Access is really smart. But when I try to do the same using ADO, I am really stupid. Say I have two parent tables (eg Course, Student) and one child table (StudentProgress). The course progress records how a student progresses on a course. I have one course (History) and one student called Maya. I now want to record her grade (64). If I do this in Access using a form, then the form...

Hello all, Form A & Form B Form B opens when I click on a button from Form A. How do I setup Form B so it will always let me insert new records. Because right know, when I click on the button from Form A to Form B (onClickEvent), Form B will open and show all the records that the table has. So I need to click on the navigation button (buttom of the form) and insert a new record.

I have a form "AccountInfo" that contains company names. I have inserted a subform "Contacts" with contact names and have established parent/child relationships between the two forms. All works well. I created an "Add New Contact" command button which passes the CompanyID (unique key set to autonumber) to the new record. This successfully works if the parent record (AccountInfo) has at least one existing contact. But if there are no...

Hi - I have been struggling with solution ideas for this now for almost 2 weeks, and have not been able to figure this out. I have a user who creates a Purchase Order (tblPOData). In some circumstances, this or another user must create an invoice to go with the PO (I know - that makes no sense, but this is the business case). I have the user go to a form to create the invoice:

Hello, I have 2 tables, one contains log of all incoming phone calls, and the other one is simply a phone book. I want to fetch caller's name if it's already exist in the phone book, and if it doesn't exist yet just fetch caller's phone number. Is it possible to do this in just a single query? Something like: SELECT Switch((SELECT count(a.*) FROM phone_log a, phone_book b WHERE

Greetings everyone, I have a problem that I hope has a simple solution. I am using MS Access 2003. I have a table that is a list of financial transactions. I am using a make table query over that table, and want to return a single record where multiple exist for the five fields that are keys on the table. The rule as to which record I want returned where many exist is to use the record with the most recent transaction date (a field on the...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
