HELP! -- Trying to put up first database

Hi,

I've converted the tables from an old Access application to MySql format. I
then linked the tables into access using MyODBC and everything works great
(on my computer). For now, I want to keep Access as a front end, and move
the tables to the Internet. I feel like I'm lost in a maze or something with
some really basic questions.

What do I need in terms of a host? I have been looking at ipowerweb because
they have a reseller program and that is something that I am potentially
interested in. I am also looking at the hosting services provided by
mysql.com. I'm pretty sure they have what I need, if only I knew what to ask
for!

Also, for this first app, there is only one database, but there are a number
of users. I don't understand the security setup. Do these people need to be
"users", as in the way you setup users on a web page? Or, do I just have to
setup users in MySql?

I hope that was clear. Here is what I want:

1) I need to know who to get in terms of an ISP. If they have a reseller
agreement, that's a plus.

2) Assume I find that ISP and get an account that allows for, say, five
"users". Does that have anything at all to do with who and how many people
can access and use the database?

3) Beyond all of this, I'm a bit lost in trying to get a handle on the big
picture of what tools I need to administer these databases, to create forms,
etc. It seems that phpmyadmin will not run on my windoze xp computer no
matter what I click. Also, must I learn php or whatever in order to create a
database? Or is there some product out there that will let me concentrate on
the visual design and generate queries and forms and so forth, ala Access?

Thanks!

I'm not shure what you asking.
Are your shure you can connect to a on-line MySQL database with your Access
application?
I mean, if you're not shure, maybe it woun't even work.

But if it works...
You need 5 users on 1 database with serveral tables.
(I think this is what your are saying in your discription).

If you explain what the users can do and cannot and what tables they need to
access, maybe that helps.
I think my provider www.sohosted.com provides this (but you can even use
your Access database if you want) from about $2,- (excl. 19% taxes = 1.50
euros) per month.
But you first need to explain (aso for yourself), what each user needs.

Wouter,

I can connect Access to MySQL using MyODBC. Actually, there's quit a bit of
documentation of how to do this on mysql.com. I have the database connecting
here on my computer, so I think it is just a matter of getting the database
online and then connecting to the tables via ODBC.

But if it works...
You need 5 users on 1 database with serveral tables.
(I think this is what your are saying in your discription).

If you explain what the users can do and cannot and what tables they need
to
access, maybe that helps.
They would need to be able to use the database, for example, edit and view
data in forms, pull reports, etc. They would not need to administer the
database. I will administer the database myself, I assume using phpmyadmin
on the server, or other tools for whatever I do on my computer.
I think my provider www.sohosted.com provides this (but you can even use
your Access database if you want) from about $2,- (excl. 19% taxes = 1.50
euros) per month.
I think that in order to use an Access database online, you can't use the
Jet Engine. There are some basic ASP forms you can generate using Access,
and combined with FrontPage extensions there is some limited functionality.
For the most part, you have to move your tables to SQL or something like
that, as I am doing. I'll bet that they are suggesting something like what I
am doing, which is using an Access front end and using MySQL for the data on
the server.
But you first need to explain (aso for yourself), what each user needs.

For myself, I need to create, change and maintain all aspects of the
database as related to development and maintenance. The users will simply be
users of the database, meaning that they would need to read and write data
through forms and pull reports.

Thanks!!

I am doing a project for school that involves creating help files for a html authoring tool. If you could help me with answers to some questions it would really help. 1. What tasks do you expect an html authoring tool to help you accomplish? 2. What do you expect from online help for a html authoring tool? 3. What audience do you think a freeware html authoring tool is directed towards?
