xp / vista network

hi all
i have recently changed one of our home computers to one which runs vista
the other is xp , my question / problem is i have them joined by crossover cable to share internet connection vista being the host . they both connect ( to each other ) but the client cannot surf internet ie will not connect tried repairing the connection and a thousand other settings but no internet for my son !!!!!

To specify, do you not have internet on either computer? Do you have internet on the Vista computer, but not on the XP computer? Do you have internet on the XP computer, but not on the Vista computer?

Also, this might belong in the Networking forum...

to be clearer i do have the web on the vista machine
i do not have the web on the xp machine
tried the lltp update from microsoft which brings xp up on network mapbut still they wont communicate !! tried pinging from both ends and get correct replies
even entering ip address manually but nothing !

Could possibly be the firewall...
visat's firewall has freaked me out unexpectedly a number of times
