How do I get ranked by search engines?

Hi there,

I am not sure, if this is the right forum to ask, but I am using ASP.Net. Therefore I have choosen this forum.

My question is very simple. I have programmed a web application using ASP.Net 2.0. I want my site to be ranked at top on search engines like google.

What can I do, to accomplish this. Please note that I have got a lot of users, which are also using other websites of mine. Do I have to register somewhere?

Does it help, for example, if a user navigates to site A: I redirect the user from site A to site B, and then back from B to A. So, when any user wants to visit A, he has also visited B. Is something like this possible?

Thanks for help,
bye...

moved to Misc. Questions forum. The ASP forum is neither the place for ASP.NET questions nor questions about general web technologies.

Hi,

I have learnt a bit about search engines....built a mini one too...but it was still not at all anywhere near to google or live or yahoo....or even others!

Anyways.....to start off with search engines use crawlers.
they are basically scripts which keep running and follow a webpage, and then its links. Each webpage that it encounters is read and indexed for its contents

ranking would generally be based on the quality of the contents. And links to external websites which are ranked good by the search engine.

If an external site has a link which is pointed to your site...you get ranked higher.

I believe there are certain words that decrease your ranking....things like - free, download. and all the taboo words :)

Meta tags are no more indexed, so If you have filled your meta tags with information, it will not contribute anything towards your ranking.

So at the end, since I would be an newbie SEO, I would say, keep each pages content to one topic, spread the number of topics in different pages.

Give the heading of your webpage to the content, this boosts ranking

Refine your contents a couple of times keeping text to something like bullet points, explaining things to the poin directly. using words like "examples" might do real good.

If you have any outgoing links...make sure that they point to some real good ones....like wikipedia...thescripts (Ive seen this site is very well ranked, yay) microsoft, etc....

Try to get other websites to put a link to your page.
However, be careful of that.. search engines will decrease rankings too, especially if banned or bad websites (as defined by them) have a link to you.

hope this helps somehow!

cheers

The other thing.....
some websites made this thing which confused the crawler and the crawler was always stuck in a loop which meant that it started hitting the strike rate for that site, and improved the ranking drastically high.

The new generation of crawlers can detect that...and if they do, you would either recieve a warning from the search engine....or you would be banned.

And getting off their ban isint an easy one.
