singular or plural

Hi everyone, I was recently at a meeting where a social event was being planned. One item on the program was "seating of guest". I said the word should be "guests" because there were quite a few people to be seated. I was shot down and told that the word "guest" could mean more than one person and that's the way it is on all programs. Everyone at the meeting agreed with this and I felt like a dummy. Were they correct? Thanks

I've never heard of "guest" as a collective noun. You were correct. As a writer, I certainly wouldn't get away with "seating of guest" in the context you described.

"seating of guest" is plain wrong if there's more than one guest, and it's not great even if there's only one guest. Creating a "table plan" would be better...
