I asked previously how to address the COM port from Python and I was
directed to pyserial. It is very elegant and I guess it works very well.
However, it seems that what I try to do is more complicated than I first
thought. I want to make my modem place a call using the number '1234'. The
modem is connected to COM3 on my computer. So I tried the following:

I'm writing an app that communicates with a device, either on the COM port,
or dials via an external modem via the port.
Once the dial up connection is made, device communications is by regular
serialport.write("Command').
But I'd like to now be able to use an installed modem (internal or external
modem) instead of having to rely on basic external COM port commands, but
don't know where to start.

I lost the mother board in a storm and had a tech replace it under warenty,
but after he left I tried to go on line and the message no modem located came
up. I've tried to get back with the support people but it's almost
impossible. It's a Compac with xp home. What if anything can I do? I'm about

I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
