What is the correct construct for accessing "pageYOffset" in another window?

I've tried this, but it doesn't work:

var mainPageYOffset;
//
mainPageYOffset = parent.main.window.pageYOffset;

That IS the correct way. :-)

Maybe you make a mistake with parent.main?
Do they exist?

try to alert to be sure:
alert (parent.main);

should return a window object.

Don, one more thing: pageYOffset is ONLY navigator, not IE.
