I am new to java.I have come from C++ background.
I have got to develop a GUI application for my product which is in C++. It has to be supported on multiplatform win, hp, sol, aix, lnx
I was trying to evaluate Java Vs Dot Net.
I want to develop a quick and effective gui application.
Any recommendations will be appreciated.

How are you planning to run .NET on something different than Windows?
But let me get this straight: you have an existing C++ application and you wish to create a GUI around that existing app, right? Why not go for GTK or the likes instead of Java?

If you are new to Java you might want to spend some time learning Java first before you start to develop an effective GUI application. As soon as you are ready, go to www.sun.com and download Netbeans IDE and use that.

I would recommend QT, only because I've used it and it's easy to learn and use and it's incredibly well documented.
Then again, I taught myself C++ basically while teaching myself QT. Still, gui ended up being really good. ... I'm gonna stop talking about myself now.
