Anyone have any experience with inexpensive development environments for Mac
OS X?
I am a dabbler, not a pro, so I don't need an "Enterprise " version of
anything.
Thanks,

Try Apple's own development environment. It's free and pretty thorough. Go
to http://developer.apple.com/tools/macosxtools.html
-and read about it. There's a new version just come out, sorta beta, but
solid enough, that Apple gave out CDs with it at Apple's Worldwide Developer
Conference held recently.
I'm studying computer science myself (I'm on my first year, yay!) and I'm
using an older version and I like it ok. The only complaints I have are
pretty minor. Not quite cosmetic, but close.
Anyway, give it a try.

Just found: at the bottom of the above-mentioned page Apple writes about how
you can get earlier versions of their developer tools.
Enjoy!

Apple's tools, or the free package eclipse www.eclipse.org
Rich,
I'd take a look at NetBeans for sure. It's a pure Java IDE so it
should work just fine on Mac OS X. You can get it at www.netbeans.org.

Nowadays when you obtain the SDK form java.com
you get a new interactive programming environemt
much like the Borland C++ IDE.
Up to now I've been developing applications "the old way"
using the operating system command line method.
that is, javac MyApp.java
Then my computer at home crashed and I decided to install the

After many years of using LISP, I'm taking a class in Java and finding
the two roughly comparable in some ways and very different in other
ways. Each has a decent size library of useful utilities as a standard
portable part of the core language, the LISP package, and the java.lang
package, respectively. Both have big integers, although only...

I was given a Compaq pocket PC with windows mobile 2002.
I immediately began looking into how to program it and Java seemed
initially to be a good choice.
To my surprise I found it wasn't as straightforward as Java for the
desktop. Even finding a JRE for the PDA is a nightmare.
The PC came with Jeode, a version of PersonalJava....

Hi,
I am trying to compare the amount of work between using STL algorithm
VS a plain Java loop.
Let's say the class Rect has 2 attributes: area, and areaPerCent.
In Java, I just write a plain for loop with a list:
public static void calculateAreaPerCent(List rectList, float
containerArea) {

I downloaded the Sun product, and find it feature rich but slow. Can someone
recommend a more basic (freeware) IDE which will help a newbie without
hiding every bit of code? I can program my way out of a wet paper bag in a
few languages, but want to by-pass some of the learning curve for this
project.

Java is mature...however, a beginner may not stand any chance to
compete against industry bigwigs. On the other hand, .NET is newer and
gives newbies a relatively firm foothold, since there are hardly
experienced ppl there. Also, I'm interested in computer security
involving low level coding in C, C++. Which platform will be better for
me...

Hello,
Just looking for some feedback.
I have an intermediate level of ASP.NET. Since some time ago, I liked
to learn Java.
However, my hughe problem is time: working many hours every day and
studying IT project managment at university at night, don't leave me
time to learn Java.

....Microsoft ports the .NET framework to other operating systems? Will
the only advantage that Java has over .NET be lost?
I've been a Java programmer and will be shifting to .NET soon. Is this
a wise choice? Is the learning curve for C# a lot flatter than Java?

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it. ...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For...

These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then...
