IE6 cropping nested div

I have a page set up like so:

==================================

<html>
<head></head>
<body>

<div1>HEADER -- sits at top</div1>

<div2>

<div3>NAV BAR -- floats left and has a negative margin so it
appears to overlap div2 </div3>

<div4>RT BAR -- same as the NAV BAR except it's on the right
side</div4>

Main body copy

<div5>FOOTER -- clear: left -- sits at the bottom of my
content</div5>

</div2>

</body>
</html>

==================================

The problem is that IE6 doesn't seem to appreciate negative margins.
Any part of a nested div that appears outside of the parent is cropped
off. I have no issues with any other browser. What gives?

My CSS looks like this:

==================================

..NAVBAR {
margin-left: -12px;
margin-right: 10px;
margin-bottom: 5px;
width: 150px;
float: left;
}

..RTBAR {
margin-left: 10px;
margin-right: -12px;
margin-bottom: 5px;
width: 121px;
float: right;
}

==================================

If I'm being unclear, please let me know.
