Is there a maximun number of options that can be used in a Select box?

No, the only limit could possibly be that which is too much for some UA
to handle due to processing speed, memory contraints or whatever, which
is likely to be several thousand for common desktop browsers. However,
I think you'll impact on a user's ability to use the list due to an
excessive number of options to choose from long before any UA limit is
reached.

No limit is imposed by the rules of HTML. That's not to say that a
particular user agent might not have a practical limit or inherit one
from the operating system from which it borrows the drop-down list widget.

IE being one of those user agents. I once ran into trouble with ~30
drop-downs of ~100 entries each -- the drop-downs seemed to placed at
random on the screen.

But then I realised there was a far more usable and intuitive way to
lay out that form...
