How works a software for automatic retrieval of Search Engine positioning?

Hallo everyone!
I'd like to know how some software application can automatically find
out the position of a web site based on specified keywords.
Do they parse the page or any http parameters?
Do Search Engines provide them with a query language to get this
information?

Google provides an official interface for programmers, the Google Web
API (just search for it on Google). The other way to do this is called
screen-scraping, a bit more risky, but it works with anything -- API or
not.
