Query

If I have an embedded style .class p {blah blah} and use an inline style to
alter one particular paragraph in the group that the class is applied to, it
seems that the embedded style takes precedence over the inline style.
Am I right, or getting fooled somehow?
If I am right, how would I style one particular paragraph in the group that
are in that class?
TIA

By giving it a class.
If you have your stylesheet saying .class p{bla bla}, you just give
that one paragraph a class, for instance "pclass".
then in your stylesheet, you have:
..class p{bla bla}
..class p.pclass{bleep bleep}

As the second rule has a more specific selector, it'll take
precedence.

That means a 'style' element, I suppose, ...
and use an inline style to alter one particular paragraph
.... and that a 'style' attribute. Neither of these is the preferred way
of linking CSS to HTML.
it seems that the embedded style takes precedence over the inline style.
It should not. So you are either experiencing a browser bug, miss
something (which we cannot show you, because you did not provide the
actual source code) or I do not understand you correctly.
If I am right, how would I style one particular paragraph in the group that
are in that class?

Find out what makes that paragraph special and then assign an
appropriate 'class' or 'id'.
.class p{bla bla}
.class p.pclass{bleep bleep}

As the second rule has a more specific selector, it'll take
precedence.

This is of course correct advice, but you cannot beat HTML's 'style'
attribute in specificity:
<http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS21/cascade.html#specificity>. (In CSS 2.0 it is
just like an ID at the bottom of the cascade.) Sadly some browsers even
let it win over '!important' user styles. Just one reason more not to
use nor recommend it.
