Does _anybody_ run IE4 under windows?

My brother was saying his friend running IE4
(apparently he's a stubborn techno-geek) has
'severe troubles' with the site I am designing
at http://www.lensescapes.com/

The site has been changed recently (a Java applet
that was causing a 'focus' problem was removed).

I was wonderring if there anybody out there with
access to IE4 could cast a quick browser over it
and give me a quick report if they experience
any major problems..

(shrugs) Hey, I had to ask..

don't know what was going on (blank window), but other programs
couldn't even get focus until I did Ctrl-Alt-Del and killed MSIE.
[ Thanks for your help - yet again - Stan. ]

Damn! (scratches head) There is only HTML and CSS in it
now, has anybody else had experiences with either HTML/CSS
freezing IE4?

...Let's rule out the stylesheet. Could you try?..
http://www.lensescapes.com/index00.jsp , which
drops the stylesheet but includes the logo, and
most especially http://www.lensescapes.com/index00.html
which is HTML I just then threw at the W3C validator
to check it was 4.01 Strict (the logo is read in by the JSP,
so if it's the problem, the HTML version _should_ work)
Moz 1.4 had no problem with it at all (as you said).
I wasn't even thinking of testing in IE4 until my brother
commented on the problems his friend had encountered.
My 486 has some variant of IE5, but I need to put a
drive in that before I can use it..
(& I must remember to check how it looks in Opera(s)...)
I'm normally
not a fan of splash screens,
Yeah, I argued bitterly against it (but lost). This was the
'happy compromise' we agreed upon..
but for a photography site your opening
photograph looks like an awfully good incentive to keep browsing
into the site.

That's actually my brother's photo. Originally I had
a picture I took of Sydney's Harbour Bridge and city
skyline, but as soon as I saw the 'Feariy Boats on
Khalid Lagoon' I knew that was the one.. :-)

Perhaps if you fixed the CSS errors, the problem would go away.

Oh crap! :-(

Good point. I'll get back to y'all soon.

OK. The CSS errors identified by kchayka* have been
fixed. (And, yes, I feel like a complete idiot for neglecting
to check it prior to wasting the time of folks here)

So, ..does it still freeze IE4?

Yes, it does, but it's odd. I didn't get any freezing on the splash
page, but did on the home page. What was odd is that it didn't freeze
up until I scrolled to the bottom of the page.

It's something in the div.bottomBar rules. There are a couple of
superfluous properties in there that might be the root cause:
display: block;
float: right;

When I commented these out, IE4 stopped freezing. BTW, you should also
remove all of the overflow:auto properties. It causes double scrollbars
in some browsers.

I was about to complain that 'float: right;' was _not_
superfluous, but the simple test of taking it out confirms
it is. Oh right.. 'logoRight' covers it.

(shakes head) What on Earth made you think to
try that? It would not have occurred to me in a
thousand years!
When I commented these out, IE4 stopped freezing.
Done.
BTW, you should also
remove all of the overflow:auto properties. It causes double scrollbars
in some browsers.

Dang! I thought that was being caused by my (earlier)
use of JavaScript to generate the 'copyright' part at the
bottom.

Since taking that out I had not seen the 'double scrollbars'
and thought it was fixed.

It's a pity there seems no simple and reliable way to
make the scrollbars disappear if not needed, but (sighs)
it seems more trouble than it's worth.

It's out too (now for the second time).

On another tack. It is very disconcerting that 'bad styles'
can actually freeze a browser, I would have hoped that
at worst the browser would simply ignore the CSS and
render the page poorly.. :-(

The new CSS has been uploaded, I also threw it at
the CSS validator to check I had not introduced any
new errors. If things are all well, the styles should no
longer cause IE 4 to freeze (crosses fingers).

Thanks for your help kchayka.

The "clear" property is known to crash both Netscape 4.x and some
older versions of MSIE under some situations (I've hit it with
floating DIVs inside a table cell, but I never examined the actual
reason for the crash. It went away when I removed the clear
properties from the stylesheets.)

Every time a browser crash for whatever the reason is (plain HTML,
CSS, Javascript, Java or some plugin) there's a potential security
hazard going on and one should do whatever it takes to prevent that
(usually one needs to turn on all scripting support but sometimes
one has to change the browser).

Note that at least MSIE 5.5- has known security flaws and if
scripting is enabled, any web site can run any code they like on
your computer. I see no reason to support such a browser and if
that's upsets the user, it's good because perhaps he'll upgrade his
browser. Note that this doesn't mean that I don't support, for
example, lynx or links (both of which I regularly use). It just
means that I don't support browsers with known security flaws.

FYI, my IE4 is OK now.
