with nothing in your meta tags referencing it. That should handle
all cases.

Of course that covers all possibilities, I just wanted to know if
current browsers had adjusted to a more standard behaviour. After
all, relative paths rule ;)
It isn't a question of relative vs. full URL paths in your meta tags.
It is a question of following the paths (relative or full URL) in
your meta tags vs. not reading the meta tags at all and just looking
for the favicon in the root.

The standard behaviour is defined here:
(The examples have full URLs but of course relative URLs
are fine as well.)

Alas, the status of that Document is "Draft in development;
may change radically at any time."

Favicons are small, and it is likely that you already have a
robots.txt file in the root, so one more file isn't that
difficult to deal with. My recommendation is to use both of
the methods described in [ http://www.w3.org/2005/10/howto-favicon ].
Or, to put it another way, go ahead an reference the favicon in
your meta tags with a relative link to your image directory.
Then, to accommodate any browsers that simply look in the root,
put a copy of your favicon there as well with nothing in your
meta tags referencing it.

I've successfully setup a xhtml 1.0 strict page with Mozilla & Netscape to display links in a toolbar into an internal <div id='content'> within the same document. The toolbar uses some javascript, but mostly CSS class & id elements. Mozilla & Netscape work fine handling the toolbar submenus & contents, but IE6 misbehaves on several areas. On loading the page, the target div (id='content') will not display. When a menu item is...

Hi there, If I use frames, should a reference to the favicon.ico (like: <link rel="shortcut icon" href="pictures/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon">) be placed on _every page_, or is one reference in the index.htm (top-frame) enough. I'm asking this question because I had a reference in my top-frame only, wich seemed to work OK (the favicon showd in the adress-bar in all frames), but all of a sudden the favicon won't show anymore in the

I'm having trouble with a personal web page that I'm designing for work. I'm not well versed in HTML and could use some assistance. Currently, when I open the browser, the table in the head at the top of the screen doesn't stay flush with the top of the screen. I've tried changing the alignment, but have had no luck. I'm not using a stylesheet and am wondering if maybe that's the problem. Also, below the head, I have another table that...

Hi group, I encoutered page validation error, but I don't know a way around. The page has the following doctype: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd"> Some hyperlinks need to open to a new window, so I used the (wrong) target="" attribute.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
