position absolute not working with XHTML

2 New Member
I was wondering if this is a known bug?

Whenever I use the

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">

instead of the

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">

any inline styles using the position absolute style won't work.

for example, if I want to float a drop down menu over an image, the drop down menu will not apply the position i set up when using the xhtml doc type header.

is this a known bug? are there any fixes for it?

inline styles don't work with strict doctype...thats why its strict (only external css files are to be used).

use:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dt d">
and you'll be fine,
good luck

Hey Folks: I'm probably dreaming here, but perhaps there's a way... I just gave a presentation. It's in XHTML and uses CSS for making things look nice. Right now there's a small navigation system on top and the main text area. The presentation is about to be put on the web, so I'd like to add a footer on each page with the presentation name and a link back to the main site.

I've been working on a pop-up menu, one of those where you mouse over a button and a submenu pops up. Because the client wanted the menu centered, I gave the starting point of the submenu an absolute position, then used relative position to place the menu where I want it beneath the buttons. The code for the menu is posted below (in Javascript). Although I can't get this to happen on my computer (using IE5.0, 5.5, and Netscape 7.0), the...

On some suggestions from this group, I've started to turn my internal helpdesky site for our company to non-absolute positioning. I've been reading O'Reilly's CSS book, and several web sites and tips. For the most part, things are going OK, but I can't seem to find an answer to a particular problem. Using a simpler example, below's some stuff...what I'm trying to do, is get the DIVs inside the .mainbody DIV to be 100% of their parent's...

Hello everybody, can someone help me with this problem: I'm creating a page with a sidebar, and I wanted to create the sidebar as a div which gets a "position:absolute". The problem: if the sidebar's content is longer than the main content, my IE6 will not create a vertical scrollbar for the page, which makes the lower part of the sidebar unreadable. Take this code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"...

Hello: I've finally made the effort to ween myself from overly using tables and use CSS for my positioning. However, I am having a problem with my navigational menu properly aligning in Firefox, despite the fact that I have gotten a green light from W3. link to problem page: I didn't see a feature to attach my css code so I pasted sections of the code that dealt with layout and navigation below. Thanking you in advance,

Im trying to get an image to center in a div. It works as long as one part of my CSS is commented out. The issues is the part that is breaking it, is required for another script to run that I have not added in due to its vast amount of code. Can anyone tell me a workaround.. leaving the MUST have code in place. Im willing to add anything to the code, just not remove if possible. Full Code <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
