simple "floating pictures" troubles

Hello;
I have (tried) to change my geocities
site to be "styled" not "tabled".

It's certainly made the HTML nicer.

But it doesn't work as nicely
I'd like.

And it almost doesn't work at all under IE.

The only page I've updated so far is:
http://geocities.com/plybench/record.html

My intention is for the pictures that correspond
to a paragraph to sit at the same level as the paragraph, and be centred
in a "nice" area to the right of the text.

If the pictures are large, they should expand to the left,
squishing the text up a little, but most pictures are
(in fact) thumbnails. This doesn't work well at the moment.

The older table code (e.g.
http://geocities.com/plybench/bowsaw.html
)
is closer to the behaviour I want, but I'm
open to design ideas as well as implementation tips.

I assume I'm falling foul of an IE bug,
bug I can't work out which one.

Try reading the article on CSS floats at brainjar.com It's generally
thought to be the only readable article that _really_ explains how it
all works - particularly how "clear" doesn't clear quite as much as most
people expect it to, and why the text keeps on flowing onwards despite.
I don't know just what effect you're after - but if it's what I think,
then here's my attempt at it.
http://codesmiths.com/shed/things/smithing/casting/

You _need_ the extra <br> just before the <div> around the image.
Sorry about the CSS bloat. It's an old site and there's a lot of legacy
cruft in there I've not had time nor inclination to tidy away.
<div class="images-on-left" > is the key to it all and
<div class="figure" > around the images.

That looks like a great write up. I shall consider
it an an excellent meta-answer to my question.

OK. Read it. Tried some stuff. Still failing.

The behaviour I want is:
A group of pictures, displayed
centred in a container.

The container should be at least 240 pixels wide.

(intent so far: display a group of thumbnails
with some aesthetic white space)

If any of the pictures are too large too fit,
the container should grow.
(intent: if an image isn't a thumbnail,
use more space, keep eveything centred)

The container should float right.

(intent: the group of contained pictures illustrate the text)

(sample tagged page, and proto style sheet
http://geocities.com/plybench/record.html
)

How do I make a floated container grow
to suit it's contents. Since this is hand edited
I'd rather not have to hand-code each width.

OK. It works. But only under Mozilla and Konqueror.

I'm up against IE bugs.
The behaviour I want is:
A group of pictures, displayed
centred in a container.

The container should be at least 300 pixels wide.

(intent so far: display a group of thumbnails
with some aesthetic white space)

If any of the pictures are too large too fit,
the container should grow.
(intent: if an image isn't a thumbnail,
use more space, keep eveything centred)

The container should float right.

http://geocities.com/plybench/record.html
(and http://geocities.com/plybench/style.css
of course)

do the right stuff.

To get what I want I'm using:

..text_with_pho tos .illus {
display:table-cell;
empty-cells:show;
margin-left:10px;
margin-right:40px;
float:right;
width:auto;
min-width:300px;
}

As I understand matters both display:table-cell
(which makes my container grow for large images)
and the width stuff have "issues" under IE.

Now - how do I persuade IE to handle it?

Hello everyone, I'm developing a mixed-mode Managed C++ DLL using .NET 2003, and to avoid the potential mixed-DLL-loading-deadlock issue discussed in MS KB article 814472 (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=814472), I've followed the steps in that article appropriately. However, our application will have to support multiple versions of the Win OS, and we don't want to run into possible DLL Hell problems with the C Runtime DLLs. So, it's...

I have a collection of asp:LinkButtons on a web form. Based on some reporting criteria, I will be "highlighting" some of these LinkButtons. I'd like the user to be able to mouseover the LinkButton and get a "floating layer" with some text in this. How can I achieve this on the server side? The conditions that I will evaluate in order to determine whether or not to highlight a button will be evaluated on the server side.

Does anyone know of a fast way to multiply floating point numbers by powers of two? Conceptually, all you need to do is add to the mantissa. But can I write C code (or x86 assembly) to accomplish this without a full-blown multiply? For example, I'd like to be able to do the following very quickly: double x; double y;

Hello, I'm developing a small application that uses the WebBrowser control to display a webpage. I'd like to programatically access the "Show Pictures" option to turn images on and off. Ideally, this would only affect the particular WebBrowser control that I'm using and not all instances of Internet Explorer, but, since it's just an app used for demonstration purposes in talks given by me using my computer, it would be acceptable if...

'printf' has a '%a' conversion for floating-point output: For example, printing '123456' with "|%13.4a|" produces | 0x1.e240p+16| I've looked through Josuttis and the header files, but I can't find any flags or manipulators that could handle this. Is this possible with stream I/O?

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
