Hi,
I've a big and complex MS Excel file that I need to convert to MS Access database file so users can continue to work flawlessly.
The reason is the manager refuse continue using MS Excel and asking to have a system for our work.
So I thought to use MS Access instead.
This is the <<Snip>>
What is the right methodology especially that there are a lot of MS Excel formulas in that file.
Thanks

This will not be a simple task and, with all respect, we are here to help, not to do your work for free.
So, either go ahead and post the questions you may have during the process, or hire a consultant/developer to take over.

Thanks @cactusdata for your reply.
I do not want of course someone to do my work my friend.
But all I am looking for is how to approach or manage such tasks? like what is the mindset to do the job.
I am sorry if I've misphrased my question earlier.
I hope that I phrased it correctly.
Thanks

Sadly, there is no universal or generic mindset or route to follow. The transformation could be anything from an attempted straight conversion of the application and its data to a total rewrite - the latter being the most likely.

So, analyse what data you have, how the users should read/use, operate, and save these, what the outcome should/must be (reporting etc.), what data need to be stored, and what to look up later (find data, save history).

It is difficult to advise further with the extremely little information you provide.

Please, may you suggest or tell what type of data or info might be needed or provided in order to let others may advice or suggest?
I do not mind to tell any kind of info.
Thanks for your help and your valuable time.

All we know is:

I've a big and complex MS Excel file

So, start by going through the steps I listed above.

Hi there.

This appears to be getting a little off-track. Let me see what I can add to help with an understanding of the situation.

Let's start with the easiest part. I don't believe there is anything around that will convert even a single Excel project into an Access one of any complexity whatever. Feel free to search but do be very wary of any claims.

Clearly, for such work you'd need expertise in both Excel & Access. I would suggest that the Access Answers forum be a better place to post such a question but I can see why that may not have been obvious when you posted it.

So on to your question. It is at the extreme edge - if not beyond - what is allowed as a question here on Bytes.com. Questions are to be specific and on a single technical subject. Yours is very open-ended in that there are so many possible variables that affect the answer that it's almost impossible to give you anything remotely helpful. That, by the way, is why we at Bytes.com have made it so clear that these types of question are not allowed. They waste everybody's time as no-one knows what the question's really about - and you as the poster get very ittle from them.

Luckily for you, CactusData has already given a very considered response to the question you actually asked. It's actually about how to approach a project rather than any technical details from either Excel or Access. Nevertheless their answer was helpful as far as it went.

It seems that, rather than exactly what you asked for though, you are looking for help in building the project itself. That is not something we do here as explained if you read the Bytes.com rules. What I think that you perhaps don't understand is the scope of your project. It's not something Bytes.com would typically get involved with as explained earlier but perhaps if you considered yourself as standing outside a building asking for help getting your case inside and up the stairs. What you don't seem to appreciate is the building is actually the Burj Khalifa.

My advice, based on very little detail even of any of the Excel data, would be that it's unlikely to be within your current capabilities. It's certainly not trivial (unless your starting data is extremely so, but then in that case I would have expected you to have said so before this point) and will very like require that you get expert help.

I should add that Bytes.com provides the capability of attaching files as standard. Linking to external content is only allowed in very rare circumstances.

Please don't ever assume though that posting a file is a substitute for asking a question properly. Remember the question is your responsibility - not that of those reading your question to dig up what should be in the question.

Finally let me add that - even though I have had to criticise some of what you have done I do certainly appreciate that your responses have all been very well mannered & respectful and that you're quite new to Bytes.com so many things may be confusing at this time.

I don't believe we are the right place for this type of question but that doesn't mean we won't be happy to help you in future questions that you have which are technical and specific.
