Differences between UDB V7.2 and V8.2 for federated connections?

We are moving from udb v7.2 to v8.2 (Unix) and have discovered a particular
federated query runs 4 times as long with version 8. The migrate and rebind
logs have not shown any errors.

Other federated queries run pretty much the same.

In this particular case one of the columns is defined as varchar(30000) which we
suspect may be an issue. Suggestions please.
