How to create an index fast?

2 New Member
Hi,

I have a table with close to 30 lakh records. Now I wish to create an index on one of the columns.

Earlier when I had tried to create an index on another column on the same table, the query ran for more than 24 hours.

I cannot afford to give that much down time. Could you tell me a way to create this index at a faster speed?

Thanks,

Sharath

In my MYISAM table I have an index (Index_A) on 2 fields (Field_A, Field_B). There are millions of rows in the table. The cardinality of Index_A is 53. I think a query to count the number of rows that match a pair of values for Field_A and Field_B should execute blindingly fast (in the index count the number of leaf nodes for the B-Tree node...

Hi: I'm running a large database on PostgreSQL 7.1.3. 20 days ago the database failed with a threatening and not too descriptive error like: pg_exec() query failed: server closed the connection unexpectedlyThis probably means the server terminated abnormally before or while processing the request. I lost some data and had to...

I have a table where fields 1 and 2 make up the primary key. Because of this, I have a unique composite index on fields 1 and 2 (as required by DB2). Now my question is: Fields 1 and 2 are also separate foreign keys to two other tables. I have read that it is always a good idea to create indexes on foreign keys. Should I create single...

Hi, I need to read specific lines of huge text files. Each time, I know exactly which line(s) I want to read. readlines() or readline() in a loop is just too slow. Since different lines have different size, I cannot use seek(). So I am thinking of building an index for the file for fast access. Can anybody give me some tips on how to do...

I have done a fair bit of searching, but haven't yet been able to find an explanation as to why one would set "ignore nulls" to "yes" when creating an index. I understand what it does (I think), but I'm looking to understand what scenario might prompt either setting (yes or no). Any clarity you can provide is much appreciated! Thanks kindly.

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For...
