problem with db2

Hi,

We are facing problem accessing to DB2.

Seems like database manager is down

I tried starting it using db2start but it was neither showing any messages
nor returning to command prompt after finishing start. I do not know
actually if it was trying to start database or hanging somewhere

We rebooted machine and again tried starting db2 but was getting errors

SQL10007N Message "-1393" could not be retrieved. Reason code: "1".

And here is the explanation

$ db2 ? SQL10007N

SQL10007N Message "<msgno>" could not be retrieved. Reason

code: "<code>".

Explanation: The requested message <msgno> could not be

retrieved from the message file. Reason code <code> is one of

the following:

1. The environment variable "DB2INSTANC E" is either not set, or

is set to an invalid instance. Correct it and try again.

2. The message file was found, but the file could not be opened

because of permissions. Check the file permissions of the

files under the message directory.

3. The message file could not be found. Either the file does

not exist, or the directory the message file should be in

does not exist. Check that a either a 'prime' directory (the

default) or a directory with the same name as the 'LANG'

environment variable exists under the message directory.

4. The requested message does not exist in the message file.

Either the message file is outdated, or it is the wrong

one.

5. LC_CTYPE is set to a locale which the database does not

support. Correct it and try again.

6. An unexpected system error occurred. Try execution again.

If problem persists, contact your IBM representative.

7. Not enough memory. An attempt to get private memory failed.

Try again.

User Response: Reissue the command after verifying the

following:

o ensure that the DB2INSTANCE environment variable is set to

the correct literal string for the username attempting this

command

o ensure that correct home directory is specified for the

username attempting this command (i.e. in the /etc/passwd

file)

o ensure that the LANG environment variable is set to the

correct value for the installed language, or is set to 'C'

(defaults to whatever is in the 'prime' directory), on the

username attempting this command

If all of the above are correct and the error still occurs,

reinstall DB2.

And other error at different time was

$ db2start

SQL1072C The database manager resources are in an inconsistent state. DB2
may have been incorrectly terminated, or another application may be using
system resources in a way which conflicts with DB2's use of system
resources. System resource cleanup may be required.

What u suggest ?

We probably can reinstall db2 but there could be following issue

· What will happen to data already residing in db2 if we reinstall
db2? Do u think we have to save that somehow before reinstalling db2?

Is there any ways we can save the data even when database manager is not
running? I have to save the data before reinstalling.

I do not know how database stop responding. I updated AIX on Friday and also
installed IBM HTTP Server, adobe acrobat and C for AIX 6.0. I do not think
those things might have created any problem with DB2.

Warm regards,

Jagdip

As to the last part of your question, You can dROP and instance or even
uninstall DB" without damaging or even touching your existing databases.

If you have to go that far in solving your problem, it's fine. Recreate
the instance and/or reinstall the DB2 system. When done and the
instance starts properly with a db2start, do on a command line:
db2 catalog db <yourdbname> on path <path where the db was created>

As to the first part, have you done what the error msg. asks.
Do you have the db2instance set (check with db2set -all)? What were the
results?

Hi Pierre,
Thanks for responding.
I checked db2set -all
$ db2set -all
[g] DB2SYSTEM=mardb 2
[g] DB2ADMINSERVER= db2as

I can see DB2INSTANCE variable by typing
$ echo $DB2INSTANCE
db2inst1

I actually killed all processes owned by db2inst1 after trying above
commands but before i read your e mail.
then i used commands like db2 terminate, db2_kill and ipclean
then i dropped the db2inst1 instance and started database again. Now it
started fine and i also created the instance and tried creating sample
database
$ db2sampl

SQL1005N The database alias "SAMPLE" already exists in either the local
database directory or system database directory.

SQL1013N The database alias name or database name "SAMPLE" could not be
found. SQLSTATE=42705

I do not know what is going on

please advice something

Hi,
I followed your steps but i think this idea did not worked.
I dropped instance and created another instance
then i started db2 and tried cataloging my old database
and then i tried connecting to that database which gave me error saying "
The database alias name or database name "sample" could not be found.

It seems like this will create an entry in the SYSTEM catalog directory no
matter if database actually exists on the disk or not.
Do u think catalog command actually check if database exists physically on
the disk or it blindly make entry in the system table.

I have a virtual function in a base class, which is then overwritten by a function of the same name in a publically derived class.
