cannot be done in standard C.

I don't think what you want to do is easily possible. MinGW compiles to
32-bit protected mode code for Windows. You might want to consider
programming for x86 real mode using compilers like Turbo C or Watcom C.

You may be able to do this with djgpp, but ... it depends.
