neighborhood solution

Hi all..
i just passed by and think.. hopefully all of you can share your idea. :)

I have randomly generate array i.e [5 4 1 2 3]
then from that array i want to generate another array that nearly like the first array.
i dont know how to be exactly it called.. permutation or somekind of neighborhood solution.

the way i think is generate randomly between"1 to max array" 2 or more numbers. and from the generate number, i switch it.
i.e i generate 2 number and get "2" and "3". then i switch position "2" become "3" . so the new array become [5 1 4 2 3].
Is there any other way.. meaby just like local search or else...

I realize this is a C/C++ forum but maybe you want to take a peek at two articles
in the Java Articles section covering exactly this: permutations. The algorithmic
part of those articles can easily be translated (if needed) to C or C++.
