C++ Trainee Programmer Position, How?

Hi all,

I graduated from university last year( Bsc Hons Computer Science with Mathematics). I have been attempting to land a C++ programming job for 6months now and have not succeded yet. I have had plenty of interviews but they tend to say i have a lack of commercial experience. I really enjoy coding in C++ and have even read a book on its core essentials (C++ A beginners guide by Herbert Schildt).

Can I please ask for your advice on the best way to land my dream job, and also which books i should read to impress when I attend interviews. I was also thinking of offering to work for free for a while to gain that experience that is required. I have no friends or family who are programmers, and am finding it hard to break into this industry. Your advice will be very much appreciated.

Make sure that you apply for jobs that are open to university leavers, many jobs are for people with experience so are not open to you.

The books you have read are not so important as the knowledge you have.

I have tried severval IT recruitment agency's, i am getting plenty of phone calls from them so hopefully it will be any time soon.
