Use lint, ident et cetera, after you've fully utilised your grey cells
and still find them lacking.

Think of something simple that you would like a program to do.
eg.
How about rot13 encrypting a text file?
How about a game of lunar lander? Theis is played in text. On each move you
burn a certain amount of fuel. Gravity then pulls your spaceship to the
moon. The closer to zero speed you hit the surface of the moon, the better
your score.

frankly, I wouldn't worry about style until you've written a couple of
programs.
