STL: memory allocation

What happens when memory allocation fails within a STL template?:

ie:

std::string eg;
eg = "example";

Exception? or must we check:

std::string eg;
eg = "example";
if(eg.c_str() == NULL)
{
//... exit here
}

No need for that.
