stringstream simple problem, simple solution?

1 New Member
Hi,

I have a simple nit-picky question. It would be nice for a stringstream to have a member function which returns a C style string (just like a string does) so I could do this,

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. stringstream ss;
  2. ss << "Etc...";
  3. ss.c_str()
instead of this,

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. stringstream ss;
  2. ss << "Etc...";
  3. ss.str().c_str()
Is it possible to do something like this?

Did you try this?

stringstream can present itself as a string using the str() member function. That member function returns a string. A string can present itself as a C-string by using the c_str() method.

So, ss.str().c_str( ) should work fine.

Hi Group, I am using gcc 3.2.2 on linux 2.4.19-4GB (SuSe 8.2). I have a situation where I need to tie an ostringstream to an istringstream so I can write to one and read back what I wrote from the other. I had expected the code to look like: ostringstream* ostr_stdin = new ostringstream();

Sorry about the newbie question. What's the best way to convert numbers to strings in C++. The following works, but is it better than using the sprintf() "old C" way of converting? #include <iostream> #include <string> #include <sstream> #include <list>

Hi folks, I have trouble writing a class, derving from stringstream, that collects item and once it's done will write them to std::cout in one go. It works fine except when I use it as a temporary. Here is a tiny test programm: #include <iostream> #include <sstream>

If you run this simple console program after building it on VC++ .NET 2003, you will see the error message, "Error getting initial stream position", from the attempt to use the std::ostream::tellp() method to get the output stream position of a std::stringstream. I can see no reason for this error and deem it a bug in VC++ .NET 2003. If anyone knows of a workaround or a fix for this, I would appreciate finding out about it. BTW, where do I...

I want to do some find and erase operations that i find in the string class, upon the entire text contents of a file. I made a function that will take a string (designed to hold the entire file contents) my problem now is how can i grab all the file contents in one swoop and put it in a string for editing? I hate to go through the file and copy line by line:

I am trying to use stringstreams and my book doesn't cover the included methods. For example, if I init a istringstream on a string and suck all the data out, then put more stuff into the string, how do I reset the ISS to see the new data? Does this make sense?

I'm trying to get use to using stringstream and I've run across a case that puzzles me. Perhaps you have some suggestion for the following: Why in the code below for case 2, intVal is always 1? // StringToInt.cc // // #include <sstream>

Hi all! I have a question about thread synchronization and c++ streams (iostreams, stringstreams, etc). When optimizing a program for a multicore processor I found that stringstream was causing a LOT of synchronization overhead. After a bit of digging I concluded that this synchronization has to do with the access to a global locale inside the stream. The problem can be seen by running the small distilled benchmark code

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
