I'm trying to reproduce the capabilities in both Notepad and Excel, whereby
a Unicode text file with Unicode characters can be converted to ANSI, while
still preserving the unicode characters within.
Specifically, I'm using the unicode character &x2022, which is a largish
bullet.
I've tried this:

I have a program will really big embedded text resources.
Because of internationalization I have to save the embedded text in UTF-8,
but it more then triple bigger then the original file.
The last problem is the compiled file size, the REALLY problem is the memory
amount used by the program, because of the embedded unicode file. It loads
the values of the file into some hashes.
With ASCII the program takes about 17k of RAM in runtime

Hi,
I am extending an existing MFC app to use Unicode (for a
Japanese version of the interface elements). The app's
purpose is to control a peripheral device through the
serial port, and the device only understands ansi strings
(in fact, I synthesize a character stream and send it as
though it was typed into a terminal). The problem seems to
be that the VC++ 6 linker insists that if I use the
#define UNICODE and _UNICODE preprocessor...

I have not been able to find a simple, straight forward Unicode to ASCII
string conversion function in VB.Net.
Is that because such a function does not exists or do I overlook it?
I found Encoding.Convert, but that needs byte arrays.
Thanks,

I need to determine if a string contains double-byte (unicode) characters.
In SQL, it was easy. Cast it from NVARCHAR to VARCHAR and back again, and
see if it got lossage.
But in VB.NET, all strings are stored as unicode, so I'm not sure what to
do. I'd like to do something like this:
Dim s1, s2 As String

One thing that keeps coming up in this forum is that
standard C lacks many functions which are required in
a workstation or server but not possible in an embedded controller.
This results in a plethora of "don't ask here,
ask in comp.x.y instead", for queries on functions that from the
documentation available to the programmer appear to be part
of the C language. I think largely because of this "least common
denominator" C language...

Hi,
I asked Bjarne Stroustrup about the idea of adding colour standard for
C++, and he said that it is very difficult for compiler vendors to
change their IDE. But do you think it is possible ? Note that the
proposed colour standard is not just merely to ease the eye only as
what presently is in C++ compilers, but to aid in syntax disambiguation
and other advantages.
Here are a few advantages that I can think of:

Hello everybody,
since days i try to convert Unicode-Strings in VB.NET to ANSI which should
be processable in VB6 and converted to unicode again.
It should be possible with any codepage, e.g. somebody on a greek PC should
be able to handle chinese strings
-------------- VB.NET ----------------
'On the vb.net side (I am pretty sure, it is correct(?))
Dim oEncoderAnsi As System.Text.Encoding

Hi
I am trying to read text files that are saved in ANSI format with Unicode
characters such as French e German big S etc, and as I read the file these
characters appear as squares etc.
I know that if the file would be saved as Unicode this wouldn't be a
problem.
The question is whether there is an option that when I create the Stream

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
