Karl this is albeit your program, in the program that you wrote for me
I learned quite alot, i didn't realise I could return NULL for
instance or even use functions without first declaring them, but this
is where I'm encountering resistance, as all the bool functions are
compiling with the error: local function definitions are illegal. I've
never used using namespace std before and was wondering if you had
created a header file in...

Hi.
I have problems when I try to redirect everything that is sent to cout
to a file.
I have one piece of code that works and one that does not work.
The only difference is which headers I use.
What the code does:
* First writes "This is sent to prompt" to prompt.

Hi all,
Given something like:
std::ofstream out_file("path");
how do I extract the file descriptor from out_file? Is it possible?
What I want is to extract the file descriptor and then pass it to
flock like:
flock(???, LOCK_EX);

I'm trying to interoperate between file IO operations, on an open file,
between unmanaged C++ code and Managed C++, using the .NET framework.
Basically, at present, I have a C-style FILE* object, with an open
file. I would like to do some operations on this file, then while it's
still open, convert it into a .NET FileStream and do some processing
there.
I've noted that .NET's FileStream has a constructor:
public FileStream(IntPtr...

Hi everybody!
I have a small problem regarding the initialization of pointer to the
file stream under some conditions.
Imagine a class which has a pointer to output file stream and some
additinional methods to deal with it, i.e. open/close/write:
classA {
private:
const std::auto_ptr<std::ofstream> filePtr;

I have a C++ code which I want to upgrade to the standard C++
The code constructs a file and sets the file permission
The new iostream library does not include filebuf::openprot
The old ofstream constructor (<fstream.h>) accepts a third parameter (int
nProt = filebuf::openprot)
i.e. ofstream( const char* szName, int nMode = ios::out, int nProt =
filebuf::openprot );

I'm writing a c++ program that has many (100+) threads read/write files
simultaneously. It works well if not considering the efficiency. The
file i/o seems to be the bottleneck.
This is my code to read from and write to files:
#include <fstream>
#include <sstream>
#include <string>

I need some assistance with random access file processing. I have a function
that I would like to change from sequential file processing to random
access. Thanks in advance.
void updatePower(string filename) {
ifstream in(filename.c_str(), ios::in);
int cnt = 0;
// read all records into database until we reach the end of the file

I use C++ Builder to create a simple project that can open a picture
and save some text information to a file
My question is that:
After I execute the open picture dialog(btn_OpenPicture) and open the
picture in the form, the write to file function(btn_SaveClick) doesn't
work anymore. Every time I click the save button, nothing changed in
the file.
But before the execution of open picture, it works normally.
Why does that happen? thanks

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

The next Access Europe User Group meeting will be on Wednesday 1 May 2024 starting at 18:00 UK time (6PM UTC+1) and finishing by 19:30 (7.30PM).
In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules.
He will explain when you may want to use classes instead of User Defined Types (UDT). For example, to manage the data in unbound forms.
Adolph will...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
