Accessing files and directories through inodes

Is it possible in UNIX/BSD? Just to give inode instead of path name for
accessing files.

Thanks,

This group doesn't discuss UNIX, BSD, or whatever "inodes" are.
Please read
http://www.msu.edu/user/pfaffben/wri...off-topic.html
and then perhaps try a group with "unix" or "bsd" in its name.

What is an "inode"?

Dan

P.S. It was a rhetorical question

Hi folks, Suppose I have a large (1 GB) text file which I want to read in reverse. The number of characters I want to read at a time is insignificant. I'm confused as to how best to do it. Upon browsing through this group and other sources on the web, it seems that there are many ways to do it. Some suggest that simply fseek'ing to 8K bytes before the end of file, and going backwards is the way. In this case, am I guaranteed best results...

I'm having just a bit of trouble wrapping my brain around the task of working with folders that are above the site's root folder. I let users upload photos (.jpg/.gif files) which can subsequently be viewed on the site's pages. My hosting provider is requiring that any files my Web app writes get written to a folder that is above the app's root folder (for security purposes). When writing the files I understand how to use MapPath to...

What is the most efficient way to recursively remove files and directories? Currently, I'm using os.walk() to unlink any files present, then I call os.walk() again with the topdown=False option and get rid of diretories with rmdir. This works well, but it seems that there should be a more efficient way. Here are my function definitions: def remove_files(target_dir): # This attempts to remove _all_ files from a directory. # Use with...

I have a happily working set of asp pages which read from the database via include file "./_private/include/database.mdb". However, when I try to gain access to this database on pages one folder removed using "../_private/include/database.mdb", the pages won't display. This whole system works fine on my home test server (iis.5.0), but 'breaks' when uploaded to the public server. I know the path to database is correct because the upper...

HI I am running Active Perl on a Windows XP machine. I am hoping to get some advise on a strategy to monitor and copy files that are arriving in a directory and need to be copied to a second location. Files will arrive at the rate of one every 2 to 4 seconds into a directory immediately below the parent. The number of files written to each directory will vary and the number of directories written will also vary (typically the number of...

Good morning, I hope I'm not repeating a post, but I did try to search for the topic before asking. I am trying to resolve an issue that has come up as a result of planned migration from a single server solution to a distributed solution. A site (and interrelated batch processing scripts) has been running on a single server (IIS 6, win 2003) to two machines both are IIS 6, win 2003, the machines are as follows: box1: Webserver box2:...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
