Why are bitmaps grafted into a picturebox being stretched.

I once used a set of picture boxes to simulate Recordset Navigation buttons. I used a single GIF image and spliced the relevant portion into the picture box via the paint event. This proved very successful.

I decided to try this technique again for something else, but this time I was using a bitmap image due to the number of colours available.

Every time I splice a portion of the bitmap image into my picture box the image is being stretched and I only seem to be getting half the requested width and height.

As part of my problem solving regime I converted the image to a GIF and now its fine.

Why are BMP or JPG images being stretched like this but GIF aren't?

All comments gratefully received.
