WebControl - referncing local vs compiled

I made a simple web control, if I reference it locally in my web project
with the below line, all runs fine:

<%@ Register TagPrefix="MyWebControl" TagName="search" Src="Search.ascx"%>

If I try to put that control in a seperate web project, compile it, add it
to the references of the initial web form project, then refer to it with
this register line, the page can see and load the control, but when in the
controls Page_Load event handler, none of the member variables representing
web form components are initialized, they are all null in the compiled code.

<%@ Register TagPrefix="MyCompiledWebControl" Namespace="MyWebControls"
Assembly="MyWebControls"%>

Any ideas?
