Performance Counters

Does anyone know how to start / stop performance counters
programmatically?

I am doing some performance testing that involves multiple machines.
Being able to start and stop performance counters on these machines
using a program would be a lot better than starting and stopping them
manually.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.
