I have an NT/W2K service that spawns 3 worker threads that each do different
things. For example, one monitors an email mailbox for incoming items and
puts them in a queue for processing by a 2nd thread. The 3rd thread polls a
database for updates and performs different processing. The actual
implementation is more complicated than this, but that's the basic
architecture.
My question is this: How do I gracefully shut down the service...

I am trying to write a windows service that sends emails to clients at
specific times based on information in a sql db. Since this is done for
multiple cities, I start a thread for each city and continue the processing
from each thread. My service starts fine (gives me no errors, etc), but it
doesn't seem to start the new threads. I am new to windows services, so I
don't know if I'm doing something wrong. Should I maybe be doing this...

Hi
I've written a Windows Service which has
- several (0-100) listeners threads which spawn worker threads based on
events, timers etc
- several (0-300) worker threads which handle data (message based) and
terminate after processing
I'm wondering what exactly happens when I stop the service. I don't see an
ThreadAbortedException, but I'm worried my worker threads might be

I have a windows service that kicks off a 'monitor' thread which in
turn kicks off 4 additional threads. These 4 threads basically are
listen on a designated socket and report back any errors (exceptions)
to the monitor thread.
Of course, all works well on my box. Yesterday I installed the .NET
Framework 1.1 on a new server and then installed my service. It
appears that everything is starting but when I perform a netstat - a...

I have a windows service that is mysteriously dying on me at what appears to be random intervals. Sometimes its 3 hours, sometimes it's 2 days. Clearly an error is occuring but I haven't been able to pinpoint the problem
The service's OnStart method initializes an object whose constructor creates a thread that launches other threads based on certain DB criteria. Every method I call starts with a try and ends with a catch, and any errors...

I create and start several threads, each thread executes the same method -
within the method, a web service is invoked. I find that the more threads I
use, the longer it takes for all of the threads to finish. The threads are
asynchronous, correct? And I thought each would be able to use it's own
version of the web service. Am I wrong, does the web service force only one
thread at a time to execute?
Here is code if interested... I'm...

Hi,
I've been having a problem with C++ Windows Forms apps not "ending"
when you close the form window. I've searched about this problem all
over the place and most searches have lead me to believe that this has
to do with unreleased form component events or event handlers.
I'm comparatively new to .net and windows forms, in the sense that
though I've been using them for over 2 years now, it's been rather
sporadic. I work with...

I have a multi threaded windows form application that runs great after
calling Application.Run(). Application.Run is required for a COM component
I a using in the app (required for message loop). I have created a windows
service from VStudio 2005 template. What is the windows service replacement
for Application.Run()?

Hi All
I have a server based C# console application. This application must
hide its console window when its launched out on the field. So I
dutifully P/Invoke'd FindWindow/ShowWindow combination to hide the
console window at launch time.
The application (for legacy reasons) hangs around by waiting on an old-
fashioned Console.ReadLine() statement.

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

The next Access Europe User Group meeting will be on Wednesday 1 May 2024 starting at 18:00 UK time (6PM UTC+1) and finishing by 19:30 (7.30PM).
In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules.
He will explain when you may want to use classes instead of User Defined Types (UDT). For example, to manage the data in unbound forms.
Adolph will...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
