Hi All,
Is there a good book or paper on conceptualizing Winforms as objects?
In object-oriented programming I don't find it diffiucult to see
"student", "person", or "car" as objects, but I do have problems
conceptualizing a "form" and controls on forms as objects and how they
fit together. Is there anything specifically on dealing with forms
while maintaining the OO model and design in C#?
Thanks much,
Mike 1 1464
Mike,
The best book I've found on WinForms is Chris Sells book, "Windows Forms
Programming in C#". It is part of the MS .Net Development Series. It
addresses some of your questions, but not necessarily in an OOP discussion,
but in the way it talks about forms/controls as objects, what happens in the
constructor etc. I'm working on a VERY large winforms application right now,
and it has paid for itself many times over.

I want to access an object that is instantiated in the frmMain method from within a static method. When I try to access this object, I get errors that state "Object reference not set to an instance of an object."
I know this is a scope problem, but I don't know how to solve it. My application is a winforms app and I'm instatiating the object from frmMain(). The object is declared:
public static DataAccess myDataAccessor;
What do I...

Right now the only way to use a WinForms control in MFC is to enable COM
Interop for the control and use it in MFC as you would any ActiveX control.
While this works, COM Interop is a pain, and an ActiveX control isn't as
straight-forward as a CWnd-derived object. It also means that I have to
split my code into two projects. Going the other way (using MFC in
WinForms) is only possible by exposing MFC objects as ActiveX controls,
which...

We're working on implementing a Command Pattern design with our
application in order to help facilitate undo/redo. This is fine four
user actions we control which basically means menu actions.
However, it's not quite so clear for bound controls. We don't
directly interact with the change--the user makes a change in a
control, such as a grid, and the dataset stores the update. We
haven't interjected any code which we can funnel through...

If you develop WinForms or WebForms clients that consume webservices, and
display the results in a DataGrid, you may be interested in a helper class I
found recently. It is the CollectionView class described at:
http://dotnetjunkies.com/WebLog/bsblog/archive/2004/09/02/24116.aspx
This can help with sorting and filtering of collections, when displayed in a
DataGrid.
A DataGrid is a powerful data display widget. One of the interesting...

Hi,
Just looking for some v2 guidance here...
In WebForms, the DropDownList control has an Items collection which contains
ListItem objects which, in turn, very conveniently contain a text property
and a value property.
In WinForms, the ComboBox control also has an Items collection which can
contain (as I understand it) pretty much any object which can display

I have written a winforms application that launches approximately 150
threads with
Thread.ThreadStart()
Each thread uses CDO 1.21 to logon to a different Exchange mailbox and
send/receive a number of mail messages, reporting back to the UI thread
through the use of a Queue object. When all messages that are expected have
been received, each thread sends a final update to the UI and the method
should exit, which should terminate the...

OK, I know how to encrypt and decrypt data, but here's the deal:
I have a large Winforms .NET 2.0 application which is currently storing
the connection string in the app.config file unencrypted (currently
using Windows integrated security, so there's no password). There are
only 3 users using the app right now, but that will change soon and
we're not going to have our DBAs add every user to the database... Our
data entry personnel have...

I'm developing a WinForms application. It slowly eats up memory, one
client reported that it took 200MB or more, and finnaly crashed. I
myself noticed it's common to use up 30MB memory, but if I minimize it
(all the Forms will Hide, only a NotifyIcon is shown at the System
Notification Area), the memory usage comes down to 8MB immediately.
After that, even if I show the Forms again, it uses only 8MB memory.
Do I have another way to...

Here I am learning WinForms and two months into it I learn there's a
WPF API that is coming out. Is this WPF out yet, and is it a threat
to WinForms, in the sense that all the library routines I memorize and/
or familiarize myself in WinForms will disappear in WPF? I did note
in one early version of C#, the non-generic "ArrayList" was replaced
by the generic and template <based List, but that kind of change is
not a big deal. If WPF...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules.
He will explain when you may want to use classes instead of User Defined Types (UDT). For example, to manage the data in unbound forms.
Adolph will...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
