Reclaiming dormant connection on a multithreaded TCP server

Hello!
Does anyone have any thoughts on the best way to go about reclaiming
dormant connections? I see people using timers in examples, but their
implementations vary from using a separate class to using a function
within the server class.

If anyone has done this successfully, i would love to hear their
thoughts on the matter.

As always, thanks,
James Randle.

I'm writing a multithreaded COM server to manage a pool of hardware resources. All objects are designed to be thread-safe, and I've set sys.coinit_flags to COINIT_MULTITHREADED before importing pythoncom. The problem is that all requests to the server seem to be serialized by COM. To demonstrate the problem, I'm including a simple test server that exposes one interface object, PyComThreads.Application, with a single method sleep(delay)....

If there is an associated memory cost for using session variables, can the memory used be reclaimed on an ASP page by setting the session variable to undefined or null? If on the same ASP page you use a different session variable name and after each refresh of the page, set the previous session variable to undefined before using the next session variable, does this reclaim the memory used in the previous session variable, or does the usage...

Hi My ASP.NET application has to send https requests to other web servers quite often. I'd like to know how I should manage the connections? Does the method WebRequest.Create() reuses an existing https connection to the destination server or will a new one created for each call? Can several threads use the same instance returned by WebRequest.Create()? If yes, will the requests be serialized or will they be called in parallel? This is...

Hello All, Some time ago, I implemented a data access layer that included a simple connectin pool. At the time, I did it all by myself: I created N connections, each connection associated with a worker thread that would execute the db commands. The pool was fixed and all the connections were created when the db access class was instantiated. The connections remained opened during the whole execution. If a connection was not available...

Hi I have to write a multi-threaded program. I decided to take an OO approach to it. I had the idea to wrap up all of the thread functions in a mix-in class called Threadable. Then when an object should run in its own thread, it should implement this mix-in class. Does this sound like plausible design decision? I'm surprised that C++ doesn't have such functionality, say in its STL. This absence of a thread/object relationship in...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
