Windows service start problems

Being a newbie on C# managed services, I've probably done something horribly
wrong here...

The intent is to create a windows service that runs under the SYSTEM
account. I have created a service according to available examples in MSDN,
and I have used the Installutil.exe to install the service on my PC.

The OnStart method is still completely empty, I'd like to get the base
running before I start to build the solution.

The service installs OK. All parameters are OK in the registry and the
service (with Manual start) shows up in the Services console.

Now to the problem: when I try to start the service, I *immediately* (i.e.
within half a second) get an error message saying that the service didn't
respond in a timely manner.

When I look in the event log I have two entries;

SCM event 7009: Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the DVDService
service to connect.
SCM event 7000: The Service service failed to start due to the following
error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely
fashion.

Why doesn't the service start?
Why do I get an eventlog entry claiming that the service didn't respond
withiin 30 seconds, when the event log entry is written virually
instantaneously after my service start request?

Is there a specific process or permissions that must be granted to get a .NET (framework 1.4) Window Service to run properly on a Windows 2003 Server? I built a Windows Service to start two local programs (Putty and Pageant) located on a Win 2003 Server. The service installs but doesn't start the Putty / Pageant programs properly when using any user ID except my own. Why will it work with my User ID? I install the Windows Service on a Win...

I have created a simple service which just copies a fil to a new file with a new name on certain intervals (the service implements a timer). I have no problems installing the service and the log-entries I have created on stop() and start() in the eventlog works fine as well. However - the actual task is never executed. I catch the execution of the tick and in the finally-block I write to the eventlog as well. But only one entry is creates...

I am trying to control a Windows Service via a Web Service interface. (I am developing in .NET2003) I am using the ServiceController object which allows me to read the state of the services with no problems. However, I am not able to start or stop the service unless I go through the process of impersonating an administrative user. (See MSDN KB 306158) Since it appears to be a privilege issue, I set the folders in IIS holding the Web...

I'm really starting to hate writing services -- or trying to, anyway. Why do I need to rename my project to the service name? Why do I need to set the "ServiceName" property to my service name? Why do I need to set a property within my code to the service name? Are all these required or am I just doing this for consistency purposes?

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
