The answer is neither. Use macros.
#define ALLOC(size, type) ((type) *) malloc((size) * sizeof(type))
#define NEW(type, name, size) (type) * (name) = ALLOC((size), (type))
They are both type-safe and concise.
Compare:
NEW(int, x, 1000);

Two questions relating to FAQ answer 12.42.
(1) In the statement
s.i16 |= (unsigned)(getc(fp) << 8);
i16 is declared int. The reason for casting to (unsigned) is explained as
guarding against sign extension. But left-shifting will always fill vacated
bits with zero (assuming the right operand is nonnegative and less than the
number of bits in the left expression's type). So how is the cast useful?

Hi,
I recently updated my version of gcc (to gcc version 3.4.2
(mingw-special) ), and I get a warning I am not too sure about how to best
solve:
warning: use of cast expressions as lvalues is deprecated
The code that invokes this warning has to do with PIDLs (pointer to item id
list, which are a Windows thing and not too important really). The problem

I'm using a third-party tool that takes a DataTable as a parameter. I really
need to pass it a DataView instead. When I try to explicitly cast the
DataView as a DataTable I get an error that they aren't compatible data
types. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to do this?
My last resort is to create a new DataTable object and copy the rows from
the DataView into the DataTable. But this is an ugly hack and I really hope
there is a...

I have a C# method that reads Binary data (BLOB type) from a database
and returns the data an array of bytes
(i.e byte outbyte = new byte;).
The BLOB column is saved into the database by a C program (UNIX) as an
array of "struct point" where
struct point //C structure
{
int Time; //32 bits

Hi, all! Need a little help tracking down a runtime error problem. I'm
getting this error:
"Unable to cast object of type 'myStruct' to type 'myStruct'... but the
two types are identical!
I have a class method that's building an array of user-defined structures
(see below), and returning that array to the calling routine. I'm getting
the error on that calling line.
The structure in both the webform and class are defined like this:

Hi All,
This question has to do with interface design. Suppose I have an translation
tool. It can translates structs from type "general" to other types and then
does some processing.
Example:
typedef struct

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

The next Access Europe User Group meeting will be on Wednesday 1 May 2024 starting at 18:00 UK time (6PM UTC+1) and finishing by 19:30 (7.30PM).
In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules.
He will explain when you may want to use classes instead of User Defined Types (UDT). For example, to manage the data in unbound forms.
Adolph will...
