Hello all,
hopefully someone can help me. I have got a service which I want to
deploy. I added an installer project to my solution and did everything
as stated in some kb articles (eg adding the .exe and on and on.).
Everything is deployed to the folders but the service itself is not
installed.
Can someone give some hints on how to get the service installed?

located in:
%windir%\Micros oft.NET\Framewo rk\v1.1.4322
Probably there is a nicer way...

Hello Joris,
I could install it manually by invoking installutil.exe from the
framework, but an setup project is intended to deploy the software in a
nicce manner for the customers without making such weird things like
calling regsrv or installutil.
In the KB article I saw regarding this it is said that after
installation the service should show up in services mmc but ... http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...pplication.asp

You did follow the steps at: "To create the installers for your service" , I
assume?
1.. Return to Design view for Service1.
2.. Click the background of the designer to select the service itself,
rather than any of its contents.
3.. In the Properties window, click the Add Installer link in the gray
area beneath the list of properties.
By default, a component class containing two installers is added to your
project. The component is named ProjectInstalle r, and the installers it
contains are the installer for your service and the installer for the
service's associated process.
4.. Access Design view for ProjectInstalle r, and click ServiceInstalle r1.
5.. In the Properties window, set the ServiceName property to
MyNewService.
6.. Set the StartType property to Automatic.
7.. In the designer, select ServiceProcessI nstaller1 (for a Visual Basic
project), or serviceProcessI nstaller1 (for a Visual C# project). Set the
Account property to LocalService. This will cause the service to be
installed and to run on a local service account. For more information, see
ServiceProcessI nstaller.Accoun t Property.
Security Note The LocalService account acts as a non-privileged user
on the local computer, and presents anonymous credentials to any remote
server. Use the other accounts with caution, as they run with higher
privileges and increase your risk of attacks from malicious code.

I've made a .NET windows service in C++, then I added an installer to the solution. I added the 'Project Output' from my .NET service as a package for the installer to install however it does not install my program as a service on the client machine. Is there something special I need to do? Shouldn't the 'Project Output' show the installer that I have made a service and then install the thing properly?

I am using VS.NET 2003 and trying to deploy a service program(c++) to a Windows 2000 Server system. I have also written a small DLL (USSsetup.dll) that is used to start/stop the service using a custom action. This dll is apparently dependent on the MSVCP71.DLL and MSVCR71.DLL's as per the Detected Dependencies folder visible in the deployment project
All this good except I am UNABLE to Retarget the output of the msm merge...

When I add an Install project to my Windows Service project everything
compiles and it works okay.
The problem is the Installer only writes the files to disk, but doesn't
actually install the service. Thus I must manually use InstallUtil.exe to
install the service.
I thought the installer handled this. I'm using VS2003.
