What's the main difference between asp.net and asp ?

I did not use asp.net before. I want to know what's the main difference
between asp.net and asp.

As far as I know, asp do not need an "asp" software to create (not like VB,
etc.). So... is asp.net like VB, is an independent software ?

Thanks!
