I would like to place the currently selected date

First, let me start by saying my asp.net experience is still in it's
infancy so please bare with me as I try to explain my situation.
I have created a single page that with the use of many controls (i.e.
roundedcorners component www.4guysfromrolla.com], buttons and
panels) functions like a tab control. The buttons are
programmatically designed to make the corresponding panel visible.

I've inserted a Calendar Column in my Datagridview. It works fine except for
2 issues:
1. The date appears in the AddNew Row...I would rather it only activated
when a new row is added (or read of course)
2. If the user clicks on the Calendar Column first ...in the AddNew row...I
get a DBNull error...instead of a new row being added. Here's the affected
code:

I think I am attempting a simple procedure but I just can't figure out
the correct syntax. My asp (classic) page runs a SELECT query to
obtain dates and ID's from 2 tables
