Caching a Large DataSet

I maintain a list of companies in my application. The first time the company table is accessed, I create a dataset and stick it in the Cache. When the company table is modified, I expire the cached item, recreate the DataSet, and stick it in the Cache again

I get excellent performance when running this on my local machine. I can tell when an aspx is accessing a cached copy of the company list since it's very fast. However, it's painfully slow on my production server.

I'm starting to wonder whether it's efficient to store a DataSet that large (1 table, 4000 rows, 5 columns) in the Cache. Should I consider another data type such as an ArrayList that would be lighter to carry around?

That size data is not overly large IMHO and it should not present a problem
normally. What kind of traffic are you seeing which leads to the slowdown?
If you have a large number of concurrent users, then you may feel a pinch
when the cache is accessed to service a request. Outside of that, i'd
probably start looking at some other factors for the slowness.

Alternatively, you may want to try going straight to the database as a
troubleshooting technique to pinpoint the problem. See if that helps any.

Hey, all - Context: I'm working on a project where I'm storing a relatively small amount of 'featured' product information in cache - about 30 records, not updated very frequently. They get selected from randomly 3 or 4 at a time and are displayed on pretty much every page of the site, in a DataList (and using keys). At the moment, I'm storing this information in a DataTable and putting it in cache. There isn't any sort of relation...

hi all, im currently writing an ASP.net front end to display data found in an XML file. the XML file is quite large (700k or so), and so takes a while to load. it will be changing around every second, so needs to be loaded at least at that rate. at the moment, the ASP application loads the xml every refresh - im thinking that this may cause problems when there are 20 clients each refreshing once per second. the solution im thinking of...

Is anyone using Caching (HttpRuntime.Cache) in Whidbey? Not sure if there's another newsgroup for this though since it's still beta.... I'm having issues running a system built on 1.1 in a 2.0 environment... Simple (I think!!) use of the Cache as below, BOSContext bosContext = new BOSContext(); StringBuilder Html = new StringBuilder();

Hi: I have written several web applications that obtain their connection strings from the web.config file. This is very easy to use and it makes it easy to move an app from development into production. I'm in the process of writing a site that will have lots of traffic so I'm trying to save resources everyplace that I can. My question is - do the web.config app settings get loaded once when the

All, I am designing a system that will involve an IIS/ASP.Net application server. The main purpose of the application server will be to load large amounts of static data into memory and do fast lookups on it. The total cache size at the time of first installation will be roughly 350MB, but may grow to as large as 10GB over the next five years. My questions:

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
